What Is TEF?

The Turlock Education Foundation (TEF) is a non-profit foundation that supports the students of the Turlock Unified School District. We were founded in 2011 by a partnership of parents, community members, and local businesses; TEF intends to bridge the gap in unpredictable and insufficient education funding from our state government. TEF will serve to enhance and enrich the educational experiences that serve as building blocks to our children’s education and their future.

Who Runs TEF?

TEF is governed and administered by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of parents, businesses, teachers, and administrators. The board typically has between 15-20 voting members, with additional parents serving as board members and contributing to our fundraising and information efforts. The district Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services along with three non-voting students attend meetings in an advisory capacity.

How Was TEF Formed?

During the 2008-09 school year, more than 200 students, parents, teachers, classified employees, administrators, and community members met over a course of six months to develop a Strategic Plan to drive budgeting and decision-making in the TUSD over the next five years. On June 9th, 2009 the Turlock Unified School District (TUSD) Board of Trustees adopted the strategic plan which included a mission statement, a set of objectives, six strategies to reach those objectives, and parameters under which those strategies could be implemented.

Strategy 6 states “We will expand resources (financial, human and partnerships) and ensure they are used effectively to best achieve the District’s mission as well as maintain fiscal integrity.  The first parameter identified under which that strategy could be implemented is “Establish an educational foundation to enhance student learning and development.”

Mrs. Lacrisha Ferriera, the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, was the driving force in establishing TEF as a non-profit organization and is the incorporating officer. Mrs. Ferriera served as an original advisor to TEF which was incorporated in 2011 to provide and maintain consistently high quality educational opportunities for the children of the community served by TUSD. The existence of many of these opportunities is threatened by California’s difficult budget situation.

Why Does Our School District Need Private Funding?

The reality of public school funding in California is that property taxes are just not enough. The best public schools and school districts are truly a public/private partnership.

According to the California Consortium of Education Foundations communities across California who reap the benefits of a partnership between their education foundation and school district have some of the strongest property values even in real estate market fluctuations. These communities remain strong only with the support of an education foundation such as TEF to help fund programs and expenses.

What Can You Do?

  1. Donate to TEF. Your tax-deductible donation will help keep these established programs and curriculum in place for every student!
  2. Participate and attend TEF fundraising events throughout the year and encourage business contacts and family to do the same!
  3. Volunteer your special talents or business services, computer skills, sales, copying, stuffing, etc. to help with any of the activities!
  4. Patronize local businesses that support TEF.

Every parent who has a child enrolled in the Turlock Unified School District (TUSD) has a stake in the success of TEF.
